General Horse and Breed Terms To Know


Horse: Equine 14.2 hands or taller.

Pony: Equine under 14.2 hands tall.

Hand: Unit of measurement to determine a horse's height. Measured from the ground to the top of the withers.
1 hand = 4 inches
14 hands = 56 inches
14.1 hands = 57 inches
14.2 hands = 58 inches
14.3 hands = 59 inches
15 hands = 60 inches
There is NO 14.4, 14.5 etc.

Stallion: Mature, intact male horse/pony

Mare: Mature female horse/pony

Gelding: Castrated male horse/pony

Foal: Baby horse/pony

Filly: Juvenile female horse/pony

Colt: Juvenile male horse/pony

Weanling: Weaning age foal

Yearling: Refers to a horse/pony that is a year in age.

A.I. : Artificial Insemination.

Feather: The hair on the lower leg, from the knee down. Must cover the hoof all the way around. NOT "Feathers."
